A study of odours is made up of several steps. First the possible sources of odour emission are determined and odour polluted air samples are analyzed by a totally computer controlled olfactometer, allowing to store the panellist’s answers and to interpret the results statistically. Later the odour emission of each source and the resulting immission in the surroundings is calculated by applying a mathematical dispersion model. This model allows to establish a strategy for corrective actions and even its results can be predicted by applying these actions. An olfactometric diagnosis can mean important savings in investment when the introduction of odour elimination systems is under consideration, since it allows directing the efforts to the real bad scents causing sources making the cost of execution quickly profitable.
